The death of a loved one is always a traumatic time for all those involved. The Church wants to be able to support those left behind, as well as offering the funeral rites of the Church for the person who has died.
Ideally Fr John Adams would know of the imminent death of someone who is suffering a terminal illness and will be able to support you through the journey. Sometimes though, death comes suddenly and tragically. Whatever the situation please phone the parish office (352 9275) or ring Fr John and tell him of the death. He, or a member of the well trained parish's Bereavement Care Group, will visit you to discuss how the Church can support you and will help you with plans for the funeral.
Since the earthquake St Joseph's Church is closed but we are blessed with having another church in our parish - St Gregory's Church.
Please do not set dates and times for the funeral with the funeral director without first talking to the priest.
The Church is always happy to celebrate a funeral Mass for a deceased Catholic. Sometimes circumstances may be such that a funeral service in the church would be a better option. The priest may be prepared to celebrate a funeral service at a private chapel but this should be discussed with him before arrangements are made.
